Bracing Myself

I got the news last Sunday when I went to the TMJ specialist that my dentist recommended.

At the start of every appointment, my dentist (Dra. Ge from Bolaños and Associates) would ask me if anything’s been bothering me. I just always said two things:

1) I wish I didn’t have that old silver filling I got when I was a little girl because it always made it look like I had a rotten tooth. That’s me back when I was a college freshman with the little brother of my classmate. Hehe. A couple of months back, my dentist discovered that my bruxism (my very bad habit of unconsciously grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw) had caused an abrasion on my silver filling. This meant she had to fix it so YAY my silver filling is now gone (except the grinding and clenching is not cool)!

2) EVERY time I open my jaw more than an inch wide, it makes a very loud popping sound. My mandible gets dislocated when I stretch it too wide or even when I’m sleeping on my side. It’s very painful, annoying and it causes migraines. I think it’s one of the reasons why I’ve always been very temperamental.

It’s called Temporomandibular jaw disorder (TMJD) and I’ve had it since high school. Maybe even before that, I just don’t remember it being so much of a bother back then. One of the top causes for TMJD is bruxism which I’ve always had.

How strange that when I googled bruxism, Charice Pempengco came out.

So that’s what her controversial botox injections were for! I read that botox helps relieve bruxism which causes TMJ pain. Except I don’t think I can ever consider botox… Too scary. Wikipedia says “Botox can be successful in lessening effects of bruxism, though serious side-effects are possible. Less than one microgram ingested or inhaled is sufficient to kill an adult human.” Uhhh no thanks.

My dentist kept telling me to go to a TMJ specialist in Magallanes but being the lazy little girl that I am, I never made the time to go there. Too far!! Of course, I didn’t stop complaining about my TMJ pain to my dentist and she couldn’t really do anything to cure it so she gave me a mouth splint to be worn every night while sleeping to relieve the pain (because it stops my teeth from grinding).

This photo is from the internet but mine was specially molded, too.

It doesn’t really stop me from clenching my jaw though so it can still be painful. Finally, I had the brilliant idea of asking my dentist for a TMJ specialist closer to home (yes, I did not think of that sooner hahaha) and she recommended a dentist from Dentista, Inc. right in Shangri-la Mall. Great! So I scheduled with her and last Sunday I finally got checked.

She felt my jaw popping and I’m not exaggerating when I say she was alarmed by how bad it was. :(

See this is what happens when you have TMJ disorder. I hope you’re reading up to this part because this is a very common disorder and people often don’t think much of it but do you see that disc that gets displaced? That can deteriorate and your jaw can lock completely. Scary, right? Augggh.

The problem with may jaw is that the frame for the bottom set of my teeth is too small for the rest of my mouth. The TMJ specialist’s verdict: I need braces. I was so shocked because I didn’t expect to ever wear braces. I was lucky enough to be born with straight teeth!! I asked her how long I’d need to wear the braces for and she said 3 years lang. LANG?!

See, the moral of the story is to NOT be lazy. If I had this checked earlier then I would have worn braces when I was younger and still in school. I mean, you might think that I’m making this such a big deal but I do plan to eventually continue my “showbiz career” and I can’t be wearing braces, it would be harder to get roles. Okay haha I’m not really in any rush to start working on screen again, I’m obviously trying to justify my vanity but, hey, you never know… I just don’t want to wear braces, okay?

I know I should be thankful that it’s more acceptable in our country to wear braces compared to America (the country) and how they see America (the actress).

America Ferrera as Ugly Betty

When we talk about braces locally, it’s like something out of #sentisabado. I remember when I was in an exclusively all girls grade school, all the tomboys would have crushes on the girls with braces and vice versa. When we discovered boys in between grade school and high school, we were instantly attracted to those with metal in their mouths.

Remember when cutiepie Atom Araullo still wore braces in 5 and Up? He was everybody's crush.

His braces did not fail him as we can all see in this magazine spread (Rogue, June 2010)

I guess as kids we’re just attracted to all things shiny. Then we grow up and discover the wonderful world of kissing heehee.

Gustav Klimt's The Kiss

I can’t imagine kissing with braces on! I never kissed anyone with braces either (because I don’t kiss just anybody, thank goodness haha). Wait, I think my “first boyfriend” had braces. Did he? Wow, I’m such a bad ex-girlfriend… Or a really good current girlfriend because I don’t remember much about exes haha!

The TMJ specialist suggested lingual braces (braces placed on back of teeth) so they’re not visible to others.

I hear they’re more expensive and takes longer to achieve the desired outcome though.

Still not sure about the whole thing, I still need to get my TMJ x-rayed and stuff. Maybe I’ll just need braces for my lower teeth (I’m hoping!) so I’ll update you guys after I ask for a second opinion.

Wish me luck!

  1. I got really alarmed with this one, Saab. Thanks for the informations! Btw, I think if you really need braces, you should get one. It’s better instead having you jaw locked, right? Thank goodness I have straight set of teeth too but reading this made me afraid that I may have it as well. I just wonder what the symptoms of it, aside from what you said.

  2. yan says:

I wear braces because of severe malocclusion and it’s not a pretty sight. First it’s interesting but it becomes annoying. It can take more than two to three years if you won’t follow the dentist’s required number of appointments per month. I do hope you won’t need one. On the brighter side, better have them now than later in life.

  3. bb says:

you poor thing :) braces will do you good isabella! why not jump start your “showbiz career” as ugly betty to compliment your braces? or do nerdy-geeky-dorky roles in the mean time. I think you would make a really adorable geek :) Saab the nerd for 3 years! I would kill to see that!

  4. guccinelas says:

if you think about it, 3 years of braces would be nothing compared to all the pain everyday and even the possibility of a locked jaw anytime. if it aims to really help you then don’t think twice. it should also give you and your family a peace of mind. also the sooner you start the faster 3 years would end. wish you the best!

PS: thank you for featuring the Hunger Games. it’s insanely awesome!!! i’ve had to read book 1 over and over just to relive all the glorious moments. but it no way prepared me to the things i’d read in Catching Fire! haha~ thanks so much!! i love this to bits! will be reading Mocking Jay soooon =)

  5. supermeena says:

me too, i have Temporomandibular jaw disorder (TMJD) since HS. :(
i remember when I was in 3rd year. May field trip kame, nag locked yung jaw ko for few minutes, i can’t hardly breath. I read one article that TMJ is fatal, once it get worst. If you tend to have occasional bouts with jaw pain, avoid chewing gum or biting on objects, such as pens or fingernails. Avoid eating hard or chewy food. When you yawn, support your lower jaw with your hand.

i started to have TMJ when I was in grade 6, when the vball ball hit on my head. then, it got worst when i started singing in our theater play The sound of music, up until I played volleyball & singing on stage for recitals. then, nawala siya nung nagbrace ako nung 1st year college. so i suggest you to have braces if that’s your case. i read that you want to continue your “showbiz career”, so go for LINGUAL braces. My friend Jorgina has one. at her lower teeth.

For home care: try this after a warm compress is applied for 20 minutes.
    Goodluck.

  6. khaela says:

This is how you gonna look like with braces on: http://twitpic.com/2m7oz2 :D :D :D
STILL PRETTY!! Don’t worry :) Good luck!

P.S. Kissing someone with braces tastes kalawang-ish haha! Your boyfriend loves you naman, so it’s okay! Haha :)

  7. Maria Belle says:

Braces are kinda sucks. I cannot eat properly. There’s always something hanging on it. Usually vegies and chocolates. :| Annoying. It’s also painful when adjusted. You can only eat soft foods.

  8. kneekee says:

Why not try ceramic braces? They are of the same color with our teeth. One could barely notice that you’re wearing braces but it costs a lot more than metal braces. :| I just don’t know if your specialist would allow you to wear those because there are some cases that ceramic braces are contraindicated.

  9. yzlb. says:

I had TMJD before, too. I felt my jaw popping after my dentist took off my braces. Sobrang badtrip. Pero no choice, I had to have braces again. But I don’t think braces helped cure my TMJD kasi kahit I had it on, my jaw still hurts and still makes the popping sound. Pinatanggal ko na lang ulit. And then the popping sounds and pain had gone. Pero sometimes meron pa rin. Haha. Wala lang. xD I hope you don’t need braces na!

  10. rixbajns says:

so that’s what it’s called “TMJ”.. I think I had that a couple of years back and yeah it was damn annoying. I couldn’t chew properly since opening my mouth or moving my jaw hurt me so much… :(
Good thing that I don’t have it now but my jaw still makes crunching or popping sound when I move it. Does it mean it might happen again?
And about your braces, I, too, hope you’ll need braces just for your lower teeth coz having metal all over your mouth doesn’t just look uncool but feels uncomfortable, too. You’ll have to practice pronouncing the words right. ;)

  11. Ley S says:

Oh no, there’s a little popping sound every time I open my jaw wide too! I didn’t even want braces when I found out I had an overbite.

Anyway, good luck on the second opinion, Saab! Hopefully there’s an alternative solution :)

  12. Mimi Puche says:

Hey saab! I had braces before and it’s not that bad actually. It hurts but it’s tolerable and you won’t even notice it after a while.

About the kissing part… I don’t really know but I asked my bf before and he said it’s normal… weird at first but yeah. Haha ><

Good luck with your teeth! It's for the better anyways. :)

  13. lyn says:

I can hear my jaw pop din… I thought I needed braces back then but I was too lazy din. Till now I still feel pain and the sound jaw popping is really scary. Just wear braces if its the best solution, time flies fast naman and it’ll be over before you notice it. Hehe

  14. bunnycouture says:

Hi Saab I don’t know if you’re aware about Jaya’s invisible braces but yeah, she does have/had it I think?. I always get to hear her thank her sponsor for teeth’s invisible braces in her shows before. Though, I don’t really know much about it you might want to check on it, Hope this help. XXXXXXX

  15. Eri says:

I think I also need to visit a TMJ. I can also hear my jaw popping, but not that bad that it cause me pain. Oh no braces!

  16. Aix Pineda says:

This one is a shocker. Lucky for you, you only have to keep them for 3 years. Mine’s still alive at 6 years! :( I wish they would be off by my debut. *sighs* Anyway good luck on those braces! I’m sure you’ll get through them in no time :)

BTW, I’ve heard of these “invisible” braces. The metal has some kind of white covering that’s the same color as your teeth, so they’re not kinda visible. I saw Erik Santos wear one set in ASAP, but I’m not so sure. Heehee :)

  17. Kathy says:

oh no. I have this as well. And I’ve been ignoring it too for the longest time. T__T

  18. jerwin says:

yep, you definitely need braces, you need to brace yourself for more online haters =D

  19. Roxi says:

    Hey Saab!

I have the same problem except I don’t have bruxism, just TMJD. Yun pala ang reason kaya ako mina-migraine. I have a family full of dentists and doctors. I wear a splint to help fix it, although my brother suggests that I start using ‘twin block’ because the splint won’t permanently fix it, I’d have to wear it daw until the day I die to relieve me of TMJ pains. Scary! But I’m hard headed too. Lol.

Anyway, I tweeted you the other day when you mentioned your braces. My family makes clear, removable braces, very less expensive that regular braces. I personally think that lingual braces would be very uncomfortable. My brother was featured on TV with the product interviewed by Cory Quirino. We have a clinic in Greenhills mall, if you want to check it out. :D

    • I know, the splint is just for relief!! Hassle noh.. Maybe I can just wear that twin block thing. That’s not permanent, is it? I’ll ask my dentist about it. About removable braces, I think that won’t be good for me because the outcome of that largely depends on the discipline of the patient (I really think I’ll be removing it a lot) hahaha but I’ll look into it. Are you talking about Invisalign? Thank you!!

      • Roxi says:

He said it’ll take just a few years for your bite to go back to normal and not have the TMJ anymore. Lahat talaga may discipline! Ako nga I lost my splint! I haven’t worn it for 2 or 3 months na, my migraines made a come back na bonggang-bongga! So I have to start over again :(

Positioliner :D Here check it out, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64MSvroEEtI :D

  20. jedc says:

a piece of advice… Or maybe not.
If your boyfriend doesnt kiss you for having to wear braces, hit on kids? :)

  21. teeth says:

Hi Saab! I believe I’ve watched somewhere that there are invisible braces available. You could try checking if they offer it here in the Philippines. Anyway, even with braces I think you’ll still look gorgeous. :)

  22. Christine Sia says:

    hey saab
i didnt get any of those.. but i did had my braces when i was back in highschool.. it took me only a year and it came out well..
maybe your teeth would be like that too :) like if you are going to have your braces, you better just go to the dentist every month for them to adjust :) and in my experience.. i had fun wearing them.. and how silly of me to be missing them because of the different colors of rubber bands they put :)

  23. Stacy says:

Hi Saab, I found you via Twitter where one of my followers replied to you about your TMJ problems. I think it’s very smart of you to get a second opinion. Since braces are so expensive, first of all… and second of all, because they are quite controversial when it comes to TMJ disorder treatment.
Unfortunately, even though millions worldwide have it, there is very little in the way of scientific research to prove what helps TMJ patients and what doesn’t. One thing that the National Institutes of Health (the US government health care authority) says is that “less is best.” They recommend conservative, reversible, non-invasive treatments like medications, massage, acupuncture, some types of splints (be careful because some cause your jaw to move), heat/ice, etc.
I have a website for TMJ sufferers, http://www.tmjhope.org – it may help you find some more information before your second opinion appointment. The most popular post for patients like you is the one on self-care which can help with headaches and pain (without treatments & braces, hopefully!): http://www.tmjhope.org/info-for-patients/self-care/
Also, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions I can help with! :) Hope you feel better soon!

  24. nonconformist00 says:

i have TMJ too. i had braces for a long time which also fixed my tmj. now, i dont have braces anymor (for 3 years already) now my jaw is popping again. and it hurts so bad. i cant even eat properly. D:

  25. Emir P says:

Hi Saab! Have you looked into invisalign?

  26. McDreamy says:

Ate Saab, try mo po Invisalign. Para if ever po na “back to showbiz” ka na, hindi po hassle sayo. (: More powers! Lovelovelove <3

    • Researched on that but it’s a lot more expensive daw and just like a splint, you have to take it out everytime you eat and then brush your teeth before putting it back on.. Sounds like such a hassle. I used to wear my splint out and I lost a couple whenever I took it out, had to get new ones a couple of times. If I lose this Invisalign it’s going to be so expensive to get a new one again. Although it might be good for either great dental hygiene (because you’re forced to brush your teeth after every meal as opposed to my morning and night routine) or weight loss because tatamarin nalang akong kumain hehe.

  27. Koreen says:

i’m experiencing the same. i have tmj disorder and been wearing this mouth splint for about six months already. aside from that, i’m scheduled for my last disimpaction because i have four impacted wisdom tooth that explains why I have a jaw problem. actually, last valentines day, i had a date with an orthopedic just so to fix my locked jaw. It was so terrible that my mouth’s open for about 3 hours!!! That was so tragic that my mom actually thought that I had heart attack. Though funny, I was really upset that it was just now that i become aware of my jaw problem. So now, I visit the clinic every two weeks to have the therapy and after such my dentist told me to have braces, which I totally dislike!

  28. mhakkie says:

    Hi!
I wear braces now because of TMJ (and I don’t have straight teeth). I know the feeling. It’s scary thinking about your jaw locking. I even had nightmares about it. Haha!!
Hopefully, my braces will be removed in December (after 3 years and 5 months). It’s worth all the sacrifice AND the hassle. I’m not worried anymore and I can eat BigMac na. Haha!

I remember what my dentist said to make me feel better (coz I hated the sight of me wearing braces. LOL), “You know what, I had a patient who went back to me after a few months of removing her braces….pinabalik niya braces niya kasi, nung may braces siya andami nanliligaw sa kanya but when it was gone… wala na pumapansin sa kanya”. LOL

(It didn’t work for me though, haha!)

Sa cementing part, I think it took me an hour lang, kasi what my dentist did, 6 brackets muna sa upper front then after a month sa lower naman, then the remaining brackets upper and lower, basta one month interval, para hindi mabigla yung mouth mo and maiwasan magkasingaw.

    n_n

  29. My little sister experiencing the same. Nakakatakot naman..But her dentist didn’t tell na she needed to have braces. He offer lang yong mouthpiece. And it costs 6000php. Grabe! ..Well po, I just want to say also na I like your blog :) may natutunan po ako and I will share it to my sister. At ang ganda may mga illustrations pa. Next time again. I always reading your posts :) love it. God bless ate saab :)

  30. Ay Saab, I’m just wondering what your Mom said.. kasi diba she used to have braces too. What was also her reaction to your TMJ?

  31. edge says:

i know someone who had a lingual braces and she said it was okand the result is cool

  32. Giselle says:

Ask your dentist if you could wear invisalign. :)

  33. Trixy says:

I also hear a popping sound every time I yawn or open my mouth too wide. Thanks for the information! I’ll ask my dentist about it:)

  34. Cindy Burds says:

Nyahaha ano kaya itsura mo ate sa braces mo? :)) Though, you should definitely get it if it is advised. :| We don’t want to be talking to a quiet SAAB. :)

  35. Envy Adams says:

My Anthropology professor told me that during the ancient times, people with metal on their mouth were the elite. So, think backwards na lang and embrace the braces. :) I had braces since I was in HS (I’ve graduated college already) but I can’t have them removed just yet because I’m too lazy to go to my appointments. I hope you don’t need them though, I wouldn’t wish you the same ill fate I have. Monthly pain like dysmenorrhea. :/

  36. shiela sayno says:

oh god. bad habit ko din and clenching ng jaw and grinding my teeth. and most of the times, pinapatunog ko pa ng paulit ulit yung jaw (kasi malakas yung sound nya) which is a bad idea, siguro i started doing those things when i was in high school and i am working na now. i think, i should go to the dentist.

  37. yelnehcs says:

I have TMJ, too. My dentist told me that I need to have braces for two years. 1 year down na ako, 1 more to go. :D

Hassle ang braces sa start. Masakit, nakakatinga, and nakakasingaw, but it’s worth it. I’m not yet done with the treatment pero halos wala ng pain and clicking. Nalulungkot lang ako kasi bawal na ako magchewing gum (forever) and pinabawasan yung pagkain ko ng mga matigas na food (chips, etc.). Bawal kasi ngumuya ng ngumuya. Nas-stress daw yung jaw.

    Good luck, Ms. Saab! :D

  38. cin says:

meron din ako nito before, when i was in high school, sabi nung dentist talaga daw magkakaroon ka ng migraine and worst magmamanhid or mawawalan ng feeling yung parts ng katawan mo. Pero i never had braces yung splint lang, i wore it for a month, tapos ayon okay na siya, mga 6 years ago pa yon and now hindi na naman siya bumalik:)

  39. madonnamarie says:

i think the braces will be a good addition to your cuteness.. i used to have braces and i always look forward on picking the colors for the rubber bands.. hehe! (i’m not sure if they’re called rubber bands but that how i call them.=p)

the only downside is that sometimes food get stuck in your braces, the pain when it is adjusted, it is very difficult to eat and even sleep and when the inside skin of your mouth gets poked by the wire of your braces..

i’m hoping all goes well for you.. and i love your blogs! <3

p.s. and about kissing, i never had problems, so i think its good..lol!

  40. Pia says:

Hello Saab! :) Thank you SO much for posting this (even though it scared me a bit hehe) because my I’ve been hearing a soft popping sound when I open my jaw wide, too. Sad :( Anyways, I’m off to a jaw specialist soon. Thanks for the information!

  41. ghelaiii says:

i had the same case that you had.it was even the cause of my headaches, blurry vision, back pain and shoulder pains.it’s weird how the mandible could be the cause of these things considering how far it is from those areas but my dentist explained that there were some nerve endings between the mandible that gets damaged everytime my jaws rub each other.so there,i had to wear braces again (even if i already had it when i was a highschool freshman) and a splint that makes it soooo hard for me to talk and even causes me to drool and make “talsik laway”.lucky you you don’t have the same splint that i do. >.< good thing you posted it here, this is the reason why i love your blogs soooo much :)

  42. Aynce says:

Magco-comment din ako dahil nakakarelate ako dito. XD

I was a high school senior when my mom had taken me to a dentist to get braces. Ang estimate daw, two years lang, tapos na ako. And yeah–she took hours–4 actually, kasi up and down pinagawa ko in one day–to put glue them to my teeth. And after that it’s like–okay lang, I can still eat. But like, for the next two days you’ll be in this total, annoying, will-make-you-want-to-say-FUCK! kind of pain, and you’ll get stuck in the soft diet for a week and shit.

And then like, my dentist had to take two upper molars out of my mouth [I have a severe overbite] to accommodate the teeth, and then weeks after that the popping sound came. It was TMJ din, but then my dentist said we can try fixing it after the braces come off. Apparently it came from me biting my nails [still haven't kicked the habit], and I had impacted teeth. Impacted teeth come along when the teeth erupts in a diagonal direction, so they took my wisdom teeth out, too. Pero after that the popping kind of stopped. It doesn’t pop whenever I open my mouth anymore, it just pops real loud when I yawn. I had my braces removed a full month ago, and now I’m on retainers na. :DDD Yey for me.

Okelangyan. Like what people say on TV, ‘beauty is pain.’ Braces look pretty on people, period. And then you’ll love your teeth even more when they come off. :)

    Good luck, Saab! :D

  43. rbdecastro says:

Hi Saab! I guess the TMJ specialist in Magallanes you mention above that your dentist was telling you, is my dentist? She’s Dra. Quismundo.

She’s a really good dentist. I am 18,from Lipa, Batangas and I go all the way from Lipa to Magallanes to have my braces checked every 2-3mos. That is for 4 years straight. (whew!ngayon ko lang narealize ung hassle na pinagdaanan ko.hehe) Though meron akong sunging ngipin, I also had the same problem as yours, my jaw also create a popping sound everytime I open my mouth. Kaya ung dentist ko dito sa Lipa recommended Dra.Quismundo, kasi un daw ung isa sa mga magaling na TMJ specialist. (I think she took her trainings in Japan pa.)

Good Luck! and God Bless! :)

  44. Clare says:

My jaw pops too, but for the most part when I yawn lang. My dentist told me rin that braces are an option but I’m iffy about it since I’m already in my 30s. Thanks for posting more information about this — you gave me more info than my dentist did! Lol!

Thank you Saab for blogging bout TMJ. Never heard about it and it surprised me to know that I have one. That popping sound. I thought it was nothing and found it as cool sound. But I remembered experiencing a lock jaw while yawning, puking. :( I don’t have braces and though I need it, can’t afford it so I think prayer will do.

  47. Ely Elano says:

i am wearing braces now. like you, i dont really want to have braces.. but i have no choice. Nung nakaraang vacation, an accident happened to me.. or ‘katangahan’ daw as my mom says. hehe. i belong to an amateur dance group kase.. im too brave for the stunts, lifting or anything buwis-buhay. Ayun, unexpectedly, as we practice the dance.. i jump from behind my co-dancer, my knees were weakened and my face hits the concrete floor, both of my hands were held by my partner, so wala talaga akong naitukod pagbagsak ko, only my face.. >.<

the impact was so strong that my lips bleed and three of my teeth(at the front) crack. nakakahinayang kase perfect naman na talaga ang ngipin ko. my dentist suggested me to wear braces kase may isa kong ngipin sa harap na nawala sa align or bumaba. Braces na lang ang paraan to push that ngipin back to its normal position.

at first, i am worried about that kissing thing too.. but dont be scared saab, im telling you, there's nothing to worry.. haha.

  48. jill ayson says:

my mom is also suffering with that tmj disease and her dentist required her to wear the mouth splint for atleast 6 months. before she knew that she is suffering with this disease, she often experienced severe migrains even when driving.

my only concern is lots of people are unconcious with this disease.

  49. Bea says:

I have TMJ problem too. I experience all your problems. May i please know the name of the TMJ specialist initially recommended to you? The one who was too far.

I’m currently on braces for 4 years already. My teeth has already achieved its desired form but I couldnt have it removed for the hope of correcting my TMJ (which is beyond the realm of my dentist)

Im wearing CERAMIC braces and its technically invisible on photograph however the brackets are a lot bigger so it would change your musculature more significantly than
    that of the metal variety.

Would love to hear updates regarding the process of improving your TMJ condition.I personally need to put an end to mine as well. Dont hesitate to email if you need to. Thanks :)
