CATS The Musical

I’m sure we’ve all heard about CATS The Musical. It first opened on Broadway in 1982 and from time to time the TV shows or movies I watched or even older people I’d talk to would say something in reference to the hit Broadway show. I knew it was opening here and so many people made a big deal about it but I wasn’t a theater fanatic so I was just oh cool but I didn’t really make any concrete plans to watch it.

Yesterday (or two days ago since I’m writing this at 1:30AM on a Sunday) my mom just messaged me saying she was buying tickets for it and asked if I wanted to join her, grammy and the two kids Arkin and Clara. I hesitated because I wondered if I wanted to spend my Saturday at the CCP watching a musical. After maybe two minutes, I replied “okay” because I was very curious about all the hype.

Fortunately, my curiosity did not kill the cat.

I LOVED IT! Okay, honestly, I got a little sleepy for about ten minutes in the middle of the first half but only because we had a heavy lunch and the songs at the time were very lullaby-ish. Haha! I was wide awake for Lea Salonga’s solo at the end of the first act and the song was so short, I knew she’d sing some more later. I didn’t want to risk closing my eyes and missing anything with all the beautiful lights and effects going on so I looked for candy during intermission but I couldn’t find any being sold at the CCP 😦 It’s a good thing the second half was SO entertaining, I didn’t feel sleepy at all.

Really, it was a very beautiful experience. The place was packed, the audience gave a standing ovation.Β Arkin and Clara were having so much fun, they were taking turns using my grammy’s vintage opera glasses for the entire duration of the play (two and a half hours)!

I cried a little during Lea Salonga's final song

Lea Salonga plays Grizabella, formerly a glamourous cat who has now lost all her sparkle and just wants to be accepted at the least. Her voice is so distinct, you’ll know when she’s the one singing. I love her!!

Rum Tum Tugger

My favorite character would have to be the Rum Tum Tugger who loves attention and is just super confident. All the girl cats are attracted to him — even me!

Meow

The last day is today (Sunday) and showtimes are at 2:30PM and 8PM.

Did you watch CATS? What did you think?

Yay, glad you liked it too! I’m not a fan of musicals as well (actually Cats is the 1st I’ve ever watched) but I loved it! And Rum Rum Tigger’s my fave too, he’s the rockstar cat!

Lea is awesome. Voice is def breath-taking. I found it amazing that even though she’d show up for like only 15mins max, but when it’s her part, everything stops and listens to her hehe. John O’Hara who played RRT, even said he’s intimated to Lea sometimes, but she’s friendly.

Did you mingle with them during the break? Hehe some of them lingered on the seats di ba? : )

Oops, Rum Tum Tugger pala haha mali na naman!

  4. I watched CATS last August 7,2010. Lea Salonga is the best especially when she sang the Memory. I took a picture with the picture of the CATS too πŸ™‚
Ohh…sayang hindi magkasabay ang pag-watch natin. Btw, it worth it naman,

hi! i loved the play mainly because of the overall production esp thee choreography…the only clear lyrics for me was from Lea’s singing!

we’re seated at the balcony and i was happy that the ‘cats’ really interact with the audience (the big gray cat surprised me when i didn’t know he’s already behind me while i was chatting with my friends)….that surely made my night aside from seeing Lea perform. πŸ™‚

one more thing that i love was how the actors were really into their characters as cats even if they’re just around the stage and watching whoever’s performing. they’re so cute!!! that just shows that i always looked at them at the side of the stage whenever the performer’s boring for me! hehehehe

it was also my first time to watch a play in ccp…and i’m glad i loved it… πŸ™‚
