Hunger Games

I first heard about The Hunger Games when I was chatting with my friend, Karen. We usually talk about two things: what we love and what we hate. At the time, she was gushing about these two books she just read called The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, the latter being a sequel to the first. She said I had to read it. She was telling me something about an e-book so I searched for it. All the previous books in my iBook shelf were downloaded directly to the iPad. It took me a while to figure out how to convert files to .epub (the format for iBook) and when I finally got it, I devoured both books right away.

I know the covers aren’t as “cute” as an apple in a girl’s hands or as “artsy” as any of the Harry Potter books but you know what they say about judging books by their covers…

I absolutely loved them! I loved them so much that even if I had already read them on the iPad, I still bought hardbound copies of the books! If you liked Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (my favorite of the series), you will love this trilogy. The last book (Mockingjay) just came out last August 25 and I’ve yet to read it.

So it’s about this girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives in Panem. Let me just cut and paste stuff from Wikipedia for you guys to understand what it’s all about. (I suggest you don’t go to the Wikipedia entry yourself because it’ll just spoil it for you.)

The Hunger Games takes place in an unidentified future time period after the destruction ofย North America, in a nation known as Panem.

Panem is the nation that “rose out of the ashes” of what was previously North America. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve poorer districts, with a thirteenth district destroyed in a past rebellion.

As punishment for [the thirteenth district’s rebellion] against the Capitol, every year one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected at random and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised event where the participants, or “tributes”, must fight to the death in a dangerous outdoor arena until only one remains.

Government control is a prominent theme throughout, as the Hunger Games is a form of control used by the Capitol to show their power over the districts and a punishment for rebelling against the Capitol in the past.

Doesn’t that sound awesome!? Of course, there’s a love story too. A teenage love triangle, actually, but not the absolutely stupid kind like Twilight’s Edward-Bella-Jacob. Katniss can be a little self-centered at times but I can’t help but adore her. She kicks ass so hard. I’d love to talk more about the trilogy and the characters but I really don’t want to ruin it for you!

I’ve already downloaded the e-book for Mockingjay.

Thanks to National Bookstore because they’re giving me a hard copy too! I’m going to start reading it tonight after doing my duties. This calls for no distractions!

You can get your own copies of all three books at any National Bookstore branch! You can even buy them online. This is the first time I’ve been to their website what the hell I can browse and order books online? I love you, NBS. 3. You took the words right out of my mouth. ๐Ÿ™‚

Will be reading Mockingjay as soon as I get the moolah. ๐Ÿ˜€

wow! Now I really need to get myself this trilogy.. I’ve been eyeing for this for quite sometime now but I still have a few on my shelf. But after reading this “teaser” of yours and of your friend Regina, I can’t wait to get my hands on them ASAP!

You have great blogs, Saab! You DON’T deserve only 56k views though.. You deserve MORE. Keep it up! God bless!

PS. How do you convert pdf’s to .epub? ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Kryzia says:

Ate Saab, do you think these books fit to my age? I’m actually 15 now. And I want to read them too (I love reading books). How much are these books in NBS? ๐Ÿ™‚

Btw, you have great blogs. I’m inspired by them (and of course by you coz’ they’re yours. Haha!). I’m thinking of taking your course up in college. Creative writing? I want BS Biology too (I also want to be a doctor) but you’re making it hard for me to decide everytime I read your blogs. Haha! Just kidding. It’s just that I also want to be “awesome” as you Ate Saab. Looking forward to see you, I’m sure marami po akong matututunan sa inyo. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I think you’ll be able to appreciate it! The lead girl, Katniss is 16 years old. There is blood and gore but I’m sure you watch the news and you’re on the internet (Tumblr, especially) so I’m guessing you’re not overly sensitive to these things!

Thank you so much ๐Ÿ˜€ Yes I took Creative Writing but I don’t know if you should take it. I really enjoyed my classes and teachers, yes, but you can probably just join summer workshops for this kind of thing. If you’re really passionate about writing then by all means take the course (it’s not easy) but if you just want to blog, you can do that without spending four years studying writing. Hehe. Your course does not define your awesomeness ๐Ÿ™‚ Take a course that you think will be useful for your future. Good luck!;)

Wow, I’m gonna read it as soon as I got the book. Thanks Ate Saab, yes, I’m not sensitive to those things, I won’t choose to take up BS Biology if I am. Haha! Pero duwag pag actual. Labo. Haha! ๐Ÿ™‚

THANK YOU VERY MUCH PO for your words of wisdom. ๐Ÿ˜€ My mom also told me to join workshops if I want to learn those things. Haha! Thanks Ate Saab, you’re the best! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have read these books (except for mockingjay) a couple of months ago. It was seriously out of curiosity. Stephenie Meyer made mention of Hunger Games on her website, and I said I had to read it. She said that she couldn’t put it down even when she’s at the table about to take a meal. That was pure WOW for me.

True enough, the 1st installment got me reading an entire night because, seriously, I couldn’t put it down, too. So I had to read the 2nd one, and I got addicted even more. I will read the third and last installment this semester. Gahd, thesis is a bane of my existence. LOL!

As much as e-books work hand in hand with today’s technology, noting beats the smell of a newly opened book.

I’ve read reviews on this book and I actually just placed an order for all three…problem now is how I’m gonna squeeze in some reading time, lols.

Btw, i frequent http://www.bookdepository.co.uk for most of my books, they ship for Free worldwide! They usually arrive after 8-10 working days *wink*

  9. I’m currently reading The Hunger Games. I have to say that it’s become my ultimate favorite even though I haven’t finished reading it yet. The novel is very original for me. I haven’t read anything like it. Katniss is a cool girl. I sometimes wanna be here. LOL. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Ley S says:

Wow, I’ve been hearing about this book so much. Much as I hate reading e-books, I think I’m gonna give in this time! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. Kat Buganan says:

Hi. My cousin Justin is sort of like the “Karen” in the story of my love affair with the series. I’m not really the biggest fan of sci-fi but I’ve read both books and I loved them. No, wait, LOVE is not enough describe how I feel for this series. I haven’t read anything like it before. Anyway, I got my hard copy of Mockingjay today. I can’t wait to read it!
